2021 Champion Golfer of the Year
Darren Haywood-Rodgers
The 14th edition of TML saw us head to far north east of England to Silloth on Solway on the Cumbrian coast. The town itself is very unassuming and looks like it needs a lot of love - stuck in the 1960’s is the expression. The golf links, on the other hand, is a timeless gem that is as good a course as you’ll ever play for less than £100.

We stayed at the Golf Course Hotel that sits 500 yards from the golf course, just past the molasses mill on the right. The hotel was perfectly fine for what we needed with good food (apart from the steak) and a surprisingly good range of beers.

Sadly, Ant and Barry were late casualties of the dreaded Covid and had to pull out late. Richie and Andy joined us on the Saturday evening after the practice round. The fact that Darren won the practice round was to prove ominous.

The first round saw Bryn take a 2 point lead with an impressive 38 points. Darren scored 36 and Woodsy 34 points - no one was more surprised than he was. Rolfey made up the Fab Four with 33. Come the turn of the final round Bryn had extended his lead to 4 points but that only seemed to provoke Darren who then proceeded to score 21 points on the back nine.
His golf was so good that he could even afford a “blob” on the 35th. Bryn was only one off the lead down the 36th but lost 2 balls off the tee in the right hand rough. Darren scored a regulation par for another 3 points to win by an impressive margin of 4. His record total of 73 points meant he joined Gaz as the only back-to-back winners.
