2009
Royal Lytham and St Annes
Date: 7th & 8th August 2009
Winner: Gaz
Runner up: Bryn
To begin at the beginning... This was the inaugural trip. At the time we hadn’t even thought about turning it into a tournament. We just had a collective urge to play the best links in the UK. The name “The Missing Links” didn’t materialise until we came to plan the 2010 trip.
Richie had to cry off at short notice so Jarvo took his place alongside Bryn, Gaz and Ant. As such we have 5 founder members. Richie surprised us by very generously putting £100 behind the bar, thus cementing his official status as a “good lad” and setting a nice precedent for all absentee Gentlemen Members to take note of.
We booked to play a round on the Friday and Saturday and stayed overnight in the Dormy House next to the putting green. In the end we played a third round on Saturday afternoon. The sun shone for the majority of the time and Gaz took the lion’s share of the money for all 3 rounds. Bryn still has some sand in his shoes from all the fairway bunkers he found. Unbelievably we had the course to ourselves for all 3 rounds. The course was superb (having hosted the Women’s Ricoh Open the week before).
We went out on Saturday night into St. Anne’s and had a pretty good night. During dinner Gaz managed to spill an entire tray of drinks on Bryn’s lap. He then proceeded to slap Bryn in the face with a wet tea towel. Everyone laughed a lot - especially Gaz.
Scores:
No scores were kept but Gaz outplayed everyone by a fairly considerable margin. I guess we didn’t
fully appreciate that it was history in the making.
