2013
Royal Troon
Date: 22nd & 23rd July 2013
Winner: Mr Sullivan
Runner up: Mr Hurle
2013 saw us return north of the border and our first sortie to the fabulous Ayrshire coast. It also witnessed Woodsy’s debut and he posted a very dangerous looking 34 points in his first outing.
The course was in superb condition and the weather was very kind to us, with torrential rain disappearing just before we teed off every day.
We stayed at the MacDonald Hotel, adjacent to the 18th hole. We warmed up on the Wednesday at Dundonald Links, now a European Tour venue. Gaz was born in Dundonald and played the front nine with tears in his eyes (the Pro V1 he lost on the third hole was practically brand new).
Woodsy teed off last on the Friday and looked set to repeat his first round form. Sadly, it wasn’t to last and he fell back into the pack leaving Ant to pick up the pace. Despite a wobble on the 35th hole Ant held his nerve down the final hole and pipped Bryn to the title by 2 points. A deserving winner.
We were treated like honorary life members in the clubhouse and then ventured into Glasgow for a Saturday night out. We ended up having a most entertaining time, starting with a lovely meal and eventually finding our way to a casino where Rolfey increased his bank balance. Unfortunately, Beast contracted a sudden bout of Sambuca-induced gastroenteritis and couldn’t stay out after the meal.
He very bravely made his own way back to the Premier Inn; which probably has to go down as one of the most heroic and selfless acts in history. Move over, Captain Oates.
